Tenerife is a popular tourist destination for many travelers seeking beaches, the sun and an enjoyable holiday away from the hustle of day-to-day life. However, what many people do not know is what lies beyond the popular regions of the island.

Tucked away in the secluded countryside of Tenerife is the old Spanish/Canarian town of San Miguel. The town offers visitors an experience they’ll never forget with its authentic culture and jaw-dropping setting.

San Miguel gets its name from the chapel, that was built by the Spanish settlers of the area in honour of San Miguel Archangel in 1665. Since then, the town has grown, and the parish church now stands where the chapel once did. It is also the area’s municipality.

What you’ll find between the mountains and the sea in this region is nothing short of a spectacular self-catering experience. If you’re looking for a location with easy access to other parts of the island, yet one that is secluded from the busy tourist areas, then this is perfect for you.

Introducing La Bodega

Perched on the mountains beside the sea, this stunning series of cottages is the perfect spot for anyone seeking a quiet self catering holiday in Tenerife. There are four cottages at La Bodega, so you may wish to consider each of these based on who you’ll be travelling with as some might be better suited than others.

Hibiscus Cottage – Includes a private balcony only accessible from your bedroom, which offers magnificent views over the swimming pool and gardens towards the coastline of El Medano and Golf Del Sur.

Bougainvillea Cottage – Large living space and kitchen, plus outdoor seating with views looking out onto the sea.

Jasmine Cottage – Open-plan living area with outdoor seating looking over the pool, terrace and out to the sea.

Frangipani Cottage – Combines features of an old Canarian home with the beautiful views of the sea and easy access to the pool.

Once visiting La Bodega, many people have always seen the picturesque cottages as a home away from home, and it’s not hard to see why. The area is flush with wildlife, gardens, authentic architecture, and stunning scenery. No matter the time of the day, you’ll be able to find a nice quiet chair with an amazing view to relax and read a book or have a nap.

What can you do near the cottages?

As mentioned, many visitors to La Bodega take the opportunity to explore other parts of the island. The location means that you’re only 15 minutes from Golf Del Sur and 25 minutes to Los Cristianos. As an icing on the cake, you can get to the top of Teide for astounding views of the island.

Car hire can be arranged, but if you prefer, there are loads of bike tracks and walking paths to ensure you can go on adventures far and wide if you wish!

There’s certainly no shortage of things to do…

There are traditional markets, local fishing villages, the historic town centre, and unspoiled countryside ideal for hiking and taking a few selfies. Why not explore some of the area’s museums and get an idea of the island’s history, perhaps visiting a 14th century mummified Guanche (aboriginal person of the island) is something a bit different.

If you’d rather do some more strenuous outdoor activities, you’ll not be stuck for ideas. There’s biking, windsurfing, and paragliding. Kitesurfing, Scuba diving and much, much more. Tenerife’s also home to the largest water park in Europe, Siam Park, a 25-minute drive away from La Bodega. Golf and Tennis are also available in San Miguel de Abona and if you just want a refreshing cool down – there’s always a swim in the sea.

Not only that, but there are a plentiful number of festivals that run throughout the course of the year! So, whenever you visit San Miguel de Abona, you will not be stuck for choice.
