Refreshing Summer Alcoholic Drinks

Hot weather is perfect for enjoying cool, refreshing drinks. Here are some refreshing cocktails to enjoy when you’re out with friends or enjoying a backyard get together.

Berry Lemon Basil Cocktail

Beer is the standard drink at backyard barbecues, but for something lighter, consider the Berry Lemon Basil Cocktail.

To make this drink, get fresh squeezed lemonade, some basil sprigs, either raspberries or strawberries, and vodka. Mix in some ice, add chopped berries, and a few sprigs of basil. Add your favorite vodka and the lemonade for a refreshing drink.

The Caipirinha

While normally found in Brazil, this drink offers something sweet. To make this, get some lime chunks and put them into your glass along with a few teaspoons of sugar. Now add ice and top it off with Cachaca.

The Painkiller

This drink is popular in the Virgin Islands. To make this, you’ll need juice and rum. Put in 2-4 oz. rum, and add 4 oz. pineapple juice, 1 oz. cream of coconut, and 1 oz. orange juice. Shake and pour into your glass. Top it with a dash of nutmeg.

Melon Slush

Summer means melons, and they’re a staple of any backyard barbecue or picnic. To make a sweet, fruity, refreshing drink with a kick try this. Take your favorite melon, add in Fresca, and 2 oz. of white rum, and put into a cocktail shaker. Shake well, pour and enjoy.

Lemon Mint Margy

People love mint, especially after a delicious meal because it cleanses the palate. Why not make this into a cocktail? To make a Lemon Mint Margy, mix some fresh mint leaves into the bottom of a glass along with ice and some fresh squeezed lemon or lime. Add ice and 3-4 oz. of lemonade and 1-2 oz. tequila. Shake in a cocktail shaker and strain into a glass rimmed with sugar.

Gin and Tonic

This classic drink is perfect for those hot summer nights when you don’t want anything sweet, but still, want a drink with a punch to it. This is easy to make. Add one part good gin, 1-3 parts tonic water, and pour over ice into your glass. Add a wedge of lime for garnish.

Bourbon Blackberry Collins

Like the gin and tonic, the Tom Collins is a classic cocktail. This drink is traditionally made with gin, soda water, and lemon or lime juice. If you want to spice this up a bit, make this drink with bourbon and use club soda, syrup, lemon juice, and blackberry juice.

White Peach Sangria

Another favorite in summer is peaches. This drink is made with chilled dry white wine, 1/4 or 1/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup peach liqueur and ginger ale. Mix in a pitcher and serve cold for a sweet, refreshing summer drink.

The Greyhound

If you want a drink that’s sweet but not fruity, try this one. Take vodka and grapefruit juice and serve in a Tom Collins glass.

Whiskey Sour

Like the gin and tonic, the whiskey sour is another classic cocktail, that’s simple to make and refreshing. Take three parts whiskey or bourbon, two parts lemon juice and one part gomme syrup, and mix.
