Many of us enjoy a day on the water, particularly in the good weather and the vast majority of us are paying customers who let competent professionals take the wheel, but what do you need to do if you want to step up and become a crew member or perhaps a skipper in the future? There are a number of RYA courses in Gosport and throughout the country that prepare potential sailors for a vocation (or job) that is on an entirely different level to sightseeing. Courses you can partake in include but are not limited to:

  • RYA Start Yachting Course
  • RYA Competent Crew Course
  • RYA Day Skipper – Practical Course
  • RYA Coastal Skipper Course
  • RYA Yacht Master Prep Course

Of course, the courses above don’t mean you can just complete a skipper’s course without the necessary prior experience. Those will little or no experience of actually crewing a yacht will probably need to complete a beginner’s course and gain sea hours before they can take the next step. Your RYA course provider will be able to provide you with advice about the right course based on your experience.

Where are these Courses Held?

As you’d expect, the vast majority of RYA courses are held beside the sea. If you search online, you should find a number of RYA training companies in coastal locations around the UK. Aside from becoming adept at crewing a sea going vessel you will also be grounded in onboard safety which is probably the most valuable element of all the courses available.
